You made the appointment. Whether you've been thinking about this for months or just picked up the phone on a hard day, you're here. Before that first therapy session, it helps to know a little about what to expect.

When You Arrive

If you're coming to Real Talk Clinical Psychology for an in-person therapy session, check in using the iPad near the entrance to let us know you've arrived. Then settle in: there's coffee and water available in the waiting area. You don't need to do anything yet.

If you're joining us for a telehealth session, find somewhere you can speak without worrying about who might overhear, make sure your connection is stable, and log on on time. That's it.

The Waiting Room

The waiting room is not neutral. Some people sit there feeling something close to relief; others feel uneasy, second-guessing the decision. Some aren't sure why they came at all. Discomfort before a first session usually means something meaningful is already in motion.

It's Normal to Feel Nervous

Almost everyone feels nervous before their first session. You're about to talk about things you may not have said to anyone, with someone you've never met. The nerves tend to settle once the conversation starts, but if they don't, that's normal too.

What Happens in a First Therapy Session

A first session is a conversation. Your therapist's main job is to listen not just to what brought you in, but to how you think, what matters to you, and what you've been carrying. You don't need to arrive with a clean summary of the problem.

Your therapist will ask questions. Some will feel straightforward, others might catch you off guard. This is also your time to get a sense of whether the space feels right for you. If something doesn't fit, you can say so. If you're not sure what you need yet, that's a fine place to start.
