Depression Therapy: When The Pull Toward Life Stops

A journal post by Real Talk Clinical Psychology on depression therapy in Houston, and what depth-oriented treatment reaches.

Depression has become one of the most used words in the mental health field, covering such a wide range that it has lost its true meaning, and its core definition has become diluted. Sadness, grief, exhaustion, and the ordinary difficulty of life are not it.

Sadness Is Not Depression

Sadness is a response to something, and it tends, over time, to move. Depression, on the other hand, is not organized around one nucleus, but is spread out across the whole surface of existence.

There's a pull towards life, which in psychoanalysis we call desire, that is not directed to something specific. It draws a person to things, to other people, and to the future. It runs underneath everything and is what makes us reach and hope. When this pull stops, the lively part of life stops as well. In depth-oriented therapy, depression is about this drive going silent.

How Depression Usually Gets Treated

Standard psychiatric and psychological treatment for depression is mostly organized around the symptoms: lifting the mood, restoring sleep and appetite, getting a person back to a functional baseline. This can produce genuine relief, and for some, it's enough.

The questions central to depth-oriented therapy are different. What has this person stepped away from? What is the depression protecting them from? Is the flat state a solution that the person puts in place without ever deciding to do so?

What Changes With Depth-Oriented Therapy for Depression

Depth-oriented therapy work is slow. What it offers, however, is the possibility of a different relationship to life itself. A more lively existence, which does not mean happiness (that is a topic for another day) but being present again, being alive again.
