About
Dr. Sorrel Johnson is a psychologist who provides individual therapy in English for adults, in person in Houston and online across Texas. Her clinical background spans university counseling, outpatient care for children and families, and a state psychiatric hospital, with experience in both brief and long-term care.
Her work is grounded in a relational and psychodynamic orientation and informed by psychoanalytic thinking, attentive to the patterns that repeat in a person's life. She has spent years studying what actually happens between therapist and patient over the course of a therapy, and that research shapes how she listens. Where clinically indicated, she draws on more structured techniques, like cognitive behavioral and acceptance-based approaches, to work with symptoms more directly.
Dr. Johnson is also trained in psychological assessment and has conducted diagnostic evaluations with children and adults. Much of her training has been with adults and young adults, though she has worked across the lifespan and in settings where crisis and long-standing mental illness are part of ordinary clinical life. She has experience in providing LGBTQ+-affirming therapy, including group work with LGBTQ+ college students. Dr. Johnson also remains attentive to how culture, identity, and social position shape how a person feels and how they present themselves to the world.
Her focus areas include anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, and life transitions that unsettle a person's sense of who they are.
